The State of Strategy Execution

Most companies are good at making plans. Far fewer are good at making them happen. We asked the people responsible for delivery what actually happens to strategy inside their organizations. Their answers are in this report.

Organizations are working hard to close the gap. Much of that effort produces movement — little of it produces arrival.
82%
The gap is open
More than four in five say the gap between setting strategy and delivering it is still open. For many it has stayed that way for years.
63%
Already tried to close it
Most have made a deliberate attempt — new functions, methods, tooling, consultants. Much of that effort produced movement, but not closure.
48%
Nothing firmly in place
Nearly half rated none of the six foundations of strategic delivery as fully present. Plenty of motion — but little that holds when a real priority is challenged.

I have spent much of my career watching good strategies disappear between the decision to pursue them and the work of delivering them.Joe Pusz · Founder, The PMO Squad

What you'll find in the report.

Part 1 — The findings

What the data shows: how open the gap is, what organizations have tried, and what separates the ones that closed it.

Part 2 — What it means

Our reading of the findings — who has to own the gap, and where to start — kept separate from the data so you can judge it on its own.
